چکیده

Motivated by the preponderance of so-called ‘heavy black holes’ in the binary black hole (BBH) gravitational wave (GW) detections to date, and the role that gravitational lensing continues to play in discovering new galaxy populations, we explore the possibility that the GWs are strongly lensed by massive galaxy clusters. For example, if one of the GW sources were actually located at z= 1, then the rest-framemass of the associated BHswould be reduced by a factor of ∼2. Based on the known populations of BBH GW sources and strong-lensing clusters, we estimate a conservative lower limit on the number of BBH mergers detected per detector year at LIGO/Virgo’s current sensitivity that are multiply-imaged, of Rdetect 10−5 yr−1. This is equivalent to rejecting the hypothesis that one of the BBH GWs detected to date was multiply-imaged at 4σ . It is therefore unlikely, but not impossible, that one of the GWs is multiply-imaged. We identify three spectroscopically confirmed strong-lensing clusters with well-constrained mass models within the 90 per cent credible sky localizations of the BBH GWs from LIGO’s first observing run. In the event that one of these clusters multiply-imaged one of the BBH GWs, we predict that 20–60 per cent of the putative next appearances of the GWs would be detectable by LIGO, and that they would arrive at Earth within 3yr of first detection.

We present results from a search to detect radio emission at 1.4 GHz from gravitationally lensed arcs towards galaxy clusters. Using the FIRST survey observations of galaxy cluster fields, we have clearly detected 1.4 GHz emission at the location of bright arc towards the galaxy cluster Abell 370. The possibility that this emission is associated with a projected galaxy superimposed on the arc c...

Submillimetre-wave gravitational lenses and cosmology

One of the most direct routes for investigating the geometry of the Universe is provided by the numbers of strongly magnified gravitationally lensed galaxies as compared with those that are either weakly magnified or de-magnified. In the submillimetre waveband the relative abundance of strongly lensed galaxies is expected to be larger as compared with the optical or radio wavebands, both in the...

Determining Tangential Peculiar Velocities of Clusters of Galaxies Using Gravitational Lensing

We propose two new methods for measuring tangential peculiar velocities of rich clusters of galaxies. Our first method is based on weak gravitational lensing and takes advantage of the differing images of background galaxies caused by moving and stationary gravitational potentials. Our second method is based on measuring relative frequency shifts between multiple images of a single strongly len...

Near-IR search for lensed supernovae behind galaxy clusters

Aims. Powerful gravitational telescopes in the form of massive galaxy clusters can be used to enhance the light collecting power over a limited field of view by about an order of magnitude in flux. This effect is exploited here to increase the depth of a survey for lensed supernovae at near-IR wavelengths. Methods. We present a pilot supernova search programme conducted with the ISAAC camera at...

Gravitationally Lensed μJy Radio Sources towards Galaxy Clusters

Galaxy clusters are expected to gravitationally lens background radio sources. However, due to the smaller surface density of radio sources, when compared to optical galaxies, such lensed events are rare. For an example, it is expected that there is no lensed radio source due to foreground galaxy clusters in the 1.4 GHz VLA FIRST survey. However, at the μJy level, the surface density of radio s...
